CASE STUDY
SUSTAINABLE AVIATION
Field worked with Sustainable Aviation – a coalition of UK airlines, airports, aerospace manufacturers and fuel producers – to promote the sector’s decarbonisation plans and drive policy change.
OVERVIEW
Field launched Sustainable Aviation’s 2050 net zero roadmap – a detailed report on how the industry would achieve net zero and the policy changes required to deliver this. To maximise political and public engagement we designed a giant pledge board that industry CEOs and the Transport Secretary signed. This secured 70+ pieces of coverage including by Sky News, Channel 4 News, BBC News, The Times, and Financial Times.
To maintain momentum we then launched a follow-up report on interim 2030 and 2040 emission reduction targets, and held a regular series of MP drop-ins, roundtables, and briefings for civil servants.
We worked with the Department for Transport and Cabinet Office to secure a “Jet Zero” session in the official COP26 fringe programme.
We also used the Farnborough International Airshow to showcase the sector’s progress in cutting emissions, helping to facilitate a VIP flight for politicians and industry leaders in an RAF Voyager that refuelled fighter jets with sustainable aviation fuel mid-air over the North Sea (pictured). This was covered on the BBC One Show.
OUTCOME
Our work kick-started a national policy conversation on “Jet Zero” and, coupled with sustained bilateral engagement with Ministers, MPs and officials, encouraged the Government to commit to net zero flight “within a generation”, launch the Jet Zero Council, commit £180m to commercialise SAF facilities in the UK, and introduce a sustainable aviation fuels Bill to Parliament to establish a revenue support mechanism for fuel producers.
